July Mystery Movie of the Month!

The Maltese Falcon
Warner Brothers

Dashiell Hammett's infamous private eye, Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart), is brought to life on the silver screen in this all-time classic.

When Spade's partner, Miles Archer, is murdered while working as a shadow Sam is hell-bent on finding the culprit. While his client (Mary Astor) feeds him lie after lie, Spade finds himself in the middle of a search for the priceless Maltese Falcon, a valuable statuette lost for centuries that has recently resurfaced. In the meantime, the police believe Sam is the person that murdered his partner and keep pressing him to confess.

Resourceful and quick-witted, Sam Spade is protrayed brilliantly by Bogart in the movie that is considered by many the greatest detective movie ever made. The dialogue stays remarkably close to the novel (by director John Huston's design) and the camera stays with the characters, keeping the plot moving with energy. The Maltese Falcon captures the very essence of hard-boiled detective noir.
